The Linkage Officer is trained to conduct the call in line with the South African National Guidelines on tracing and recall which involved making telephonic contact with an individual who has missed their HIV clinic appointment by 7 days. The National Guidelines for tracing also include a potential home visit if the telephone call is unsuccessful. Given our study sample is limited to men who have missed HIV clinic appointments by more than 28 days, all participants should already have received the standard tracing services provided by the health facility. In the study we conduct the tracing telephone call again to make sure all participants have received this service. No other intervention is provided.",null,{"label":14,"type":15,"description":16,"interventionNames":17},"Coach Mpilo group","EXPERIMENTAL","The experimental group receives the standard of care for the control group (see control group description) and the Coach Mpilo intervention. Coach Mpilo employs 'coaches' (a term found to resonate with men and the concept of 'getting back in the game') to work 1-on-1 with men living with HIV ('players') and tailor support for each man to help him re-engage and stay in care. Coaches provide support for a period of up to six months, during which they engage with clients about once every week, with greater contact as needed based on the complexity of challenges faced. Coach Mpilo provides one-on-one, in-person support tailored to the individual needs of men living with HIV. As such, it may address the complex and varying psychosocial barriers to HIV care that traditional clinic-based interventions typically overlook. Coach Mpilo employs men living openly with HIV as coaches. This leverages the coaches' personal experiences to create a safe and supportive environment for clients.",[18],"Behavioral: Coach Mpilo",[20],{"type":21,"name":22,"description":16,"armGroupLabels":23,"otherNames":12},"BEHAVIORAL","Coach Mpilo",[14],[25,28],{"name":26,"affiliation":5,"role":27},"Brendan G Maughan-Brown, PhD","PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR",{"name":29,"affiliation":30,"role":27},"Harsha Thirumurthy, PhD","University of Pennsylvania",[32,36],{"name":26,"role":33,"phone":34,"phoneExt":12,"email":35},"CONTACT","+27216505696","brendan.maughan-brown@uct.ac.za",{"name":29,"role":33,"phone":12,"phoneExt":12,"email":37},"hthirumu@pennmedicine.upenn.edu",[39],{"facility":40,"status":12,"city":41,"state":42,"zip":12,"country":43,"countryCode":44,"cosmosGeoPoint":45,"geoPoint":50,"contacts":51},"Multisite study with several health care facilities","Durban","KwaZulu-Natal","South Africa","ZA",{"type":46,"coordinates":47},"Point",[48,49],31.0292,-29.8579,{"lat":49,"lon":48},[52],{"name":53,"role":33,"phone":54,"phoneExt":12,"email":55},"Thabani Mhlonga","+27799790280","Thabani.Mhlongo@kznhealth.gov.za",{"type":27,"investigatorFullName":57,"investigatorTitle":58,"investigatorAffiliation":5,"oldNameTitle":12,"oldOrganization":12},"Brendan Maughan-Brown","Chief Research Officer",[60,61],{"name":30,"class":6},{"name":62,"class":6},"University of Witwatersrand, South Africa","100636323","the-coach-mpilo-study-evaluation-of-a-peer-led-intervention-to-promote-engagement-in-hiv-care-for-men-living-with-hiv-100636323",false,"NCT07564193","The Coach Mpilo Study: Evaluation of a Peer-led Intervention to Promote Engagement in HIV Care for Men Living With HIV","The Coach Mpilo Study: Evaluation of a Peer-led Intervention to Promote Engagement in HIV Care for Men Living With HIV in South Africa","Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* Male (cisgender or transgender);\n* aged ≥18 years;\n* previously receiving HIV care at the study clinic;\n* missed their most recent ART (antiretroviral therapy) clinic appointment by \\>28 days;\n* not planning to relocate to another region within the next 12 months;\n* able and willing to provide informed consent;\n* not currently taking ART\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* not meeting inclusion criteria","ALL","18 Years",{"count":73,"type":74},800,"ESTIMATED","INTERVENTIONAL",[77],"NA","Developed in South Africa using extensive input from community members and healthcare professionals, Coach Mpilo is a peer support intervention that was designed to improve health outcomes for men living with HIV. Coach Mpilo engages men living with HIV as coaches who provide support to their peers and help them address psychosocial barriers in accessing and staying in HIV care. The peers employed by Coach Mpilo provide individualized assistance to men who are struggling with medication adherence and clinic visits, focusing on specific barriers ranging from knowledge about the benefits of HIV treatment, stigma, mental health, and social isolation.\n\nThrough a randomised control trial, this project will (1) determine the impact of the Coach Mpilo intervention on retention in HIV care, viral suppression, HIV treatment adherence, mental health, HIV stigma, and economic status; (2) identify populations of men who may not benefit from the intervention and require alternative support; and (3) assess the intervention's cost-effectiveness.",[80],"HIV",[80,82,83,84,85,22,86,43,87],"antiretroviral therapy (ART)","re-engagement in HIV care","linkage to care","peer-support","men living with HIV","ARV","NOT_YET_RECRUITING","2026-05-06",{"date":91,"type":92},"2026-05-11","ACTUAL",{"date":91,"type":74},{"date":95,"type":74},"2027-09",{"name":5,"class":6},1]
