Their short- and long-term adverse effect motivate anesthesiologists to explore opioid sparing strategies. Dexmedetomidine is a highly selective α2 adrenergic receptor agonist that could help minimize opioid consumption both intraoperative and postoperative due to its sedative, analgesic and sympatholytic properties.
