AD typically starts with memory problems and eventually affects daily activities. Active music interventions, especially singing, have shown positive effects on mood, behavior, and quality of life for people with dementia, but their impact on cognition is not well understood. The project aims to address this gap by studying the effects of learning new songs on cognitive, behavioral, and brain functioning.\n\nThe study will involve home-dwelling adults aged 65 or older with AD from Argentina, Austria, and Norway. Participants will undergo 5 months of intensive musical training (twice a week) and 5 months of minimal training (once a month) in a random order, with a 2-month break in between. The interventions include learning new songs with a personal music teacher. General cognition will be measured using the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale - Cognitive (ADAS-cog), and memory for music will be assessed through various methods, including behavioral tasks and brain responses (EEG). Mood will also be evaluated in each session.\n\nThe goal is to include 113 participants to ensure reliable detection of meaningful effects. The study will explore how mood and memory for music contribute to changes in cognitive abilities, and whether these effects vary based on factors such as sex, age, AD stage, or previous musical training and general education. The project emphasizes collaboration between researchers, service providers, and users to ensure the study's relevance and applicability.",[69],"Alzheimer Disease",[71,72,73,74,75,76,77],"music and memory","N400","music-based intervention","music therapy","dementia","cognition","mood","RECRUITING","2026-05-04",{"date":81,"type":46},"2026-05-08",{"date":83,"type":46},"2024-12-01",{"date":85,"type":23},"2027-10-01",{"name":52,"class":53},6,{"id":89,"slug":90,"hasResults":11,"nctId":91,"briefTitle":92,"officialTitle":93,"acronym":94,"eligibilityCriteria":95,"healthyVolunteers":11,"sex":18,"minAge":96,"maxAge":4,"enrollmentInfo":97,"targetDuration":4,"studyType":24,"phases":99,"briefSummary":100,"conditions":101,"keywords":103,"overallStatus":78,"whyStopped":4,"lastUpdateSubmitDate":109,"lastUpdatePostDateStruct":110,"startDateStruct":112,"completionDateStruct":114,"leadSponsor":116,"locationsCount":117},"100595171","fighting-addictions-improving-lives-comprehensive-drug-rehabilitation-with-music-100595171","NCT07028983","Fighting Addictions, Improving Lives: COmprehensive Drug Rehabilitation With Music","Fighting Addictions, Improving Lives Through COmprehensive Drug Rehabilitation With Music (FALCO): International Randomised Controlled Trial","FALCO","Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* patients seeking or receiving treatment at the recruitment site for an existing substance use disorder based on ICD-10 criteria\n* ≥18 years old\n* not currently undergoing detoxification (detoxification has been completed or is not currently planned at the time of recruitment)\n* any type of substance use including polysubstance and alcohol use\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* exclusively nicotine dependence\n* psychotic episode in the last 3 months\n* insufficient language skills to participate in treatment without the use of a translator\n* hearing impairment that considerably impairs hearing of music played at a moderate volume (not relevant if hearing is sufficiently compensated by a hearing aid)\n* existing diagnosis of dementia\n* is currently receiving music therapy or has received music therapy (i.e. at planned and reoccurring intervals, not counting single random occurrences) during the past year","18 Years",{"count":98,"type":23},600,[26],"FALCO is a parallel pragmatic randomized control trial addressing long-term effects of music therapy (MT) on substance use disorder (SUD).\n\n600 participants will be recruited from multiple European countries (see Locations).
