It exists either in an iron-free state (apo-LF) or bound to iron (holo-LF). Whether LF binds iron to facilitate its absorption and/or to sequester iron from potential enteropathogens remains uncertain. However, while LF is a promising tool for treating iron deficiency, it is sensitive to heat during food processing and to the acidic environment of the human stomach. This degradation often causes LF to lose its functional properties before it can promote iron absorption effectively.

This study aims to evaluate whether encapsulating apo-LF (either alone or in combination with iron) can protect LF from digestion and enhance iron absorption. Using a randomized, crossover design, different encapsulation methods will be compared to determine which results in the highest iron absorption in women with iron deficiency.

All test compounds will be labeled with stable iron isotopes. Participants will consume the labeled compounds with a test meal or water in a randomized order, allowing for within subject comparisons. Fractional iron absorption will be measured 17 days after administration via the incorporation of labeled iron into red blood cells.",[29],"Iron Deficiency (Without Anemia)",[31,32,33,34,35,36,37],"Lactoferrin","Iron Deficiency","Iron Absorption","Iron Fortification","Stable Iron Isotopes","Dietary Supplements","Iron Bioavailability","RECRUITING","2026-02-11
2026-02-12","ACTUAL
2026-02-17
2026-05
Nicole Stoffel","OTHER",1
"100578840","the-effects-of-iron-treatment-on-malaria-and-measles-vaccine-response-in-kenyan-infants-with-iron-deficiency-100578840","NCT06816524","The Effects of Iron Treatment on Malaria and Measles Vaccine Response in Kenyan Infants With Iron Deficiency","Inclusion Criteria:

* Subject's caregiver is willing and able to give informed consent
* Male or Female, 6 months (+/- 2 weeks) of age
* Mother at least ≥15 years of age
* Iron deficient (erythrocyte zinc protoporphyrin (ZnPP) \\>61 μmol/mol heme)
* With or without anemia (anemia defined by Hb <110 g/L)

Exclusion Criteria:

* Severely anemic (Hb <70 g/L)
* Malaria vaccination prior to enrollment
* Medical condition that precludes study involvement
* Iron supplementation 2 weeks before enrollment
* Acute or chronic infection (e.g. HIV)
* Wasted (length for height z score of ≥-2) or underweight (weight for age z score ≥-2).","ALL","6 Months
324,[26],"Malaria and iron deficiency cause a significant burden of disease in Africa.
