Among other public policies to address the rise in NCD -such as front of pack labelling, regulation of food and beverages in schools, marketing regulations targeted to children- taxation has been recognized as a cost-effective strategy to reduce consumption of taxed products. Although subsidies have been used to reduce food insecurity, with the rise in NCD associated with unhealthy diets, studies have explored the feasibility of combining subsidies to incentivize the consumption healthy food with taxes on unhealthy options. The impact of prices on dietary behaviour of consumers has been demonstrated in experimental designs as well as in economic analysis of observational data on purchases. Although some experimental studies have been used to study the impact of taxation and subsidies among specific populations in France, none has evaluated the impact in the general population.\n\nObjective The aim of the study is to evaluate the impact of implementing taxes on unhealthy food and beverages and subsidies to healthy food, separately and combined, on the nutritional quality of purchases, overall and by income level, in an experimental online supermarket.\n\nIntervention description: The intervention includes taxation of lower nutritional quality products (identified using the front-of-pack nutrition label Nutri-Score - classes D and E) and\u002For subsidies for products of higher nutritional quality (identified as raw products or Nutri-Score A and B).\n\nDesign The intervention will be a parallel arm randomized trial stratified by income against a control situation with no changes in prices and the presence of the Nutri-Score on-pack for all pre-packed products in all interventions (control, taxes and subsidies).\n\nExpected public health impact: This study will allow to investigate the potential synergistic effect on the nutritional quality of food choices of combining taxation and income-based subsidies in a context of social inequalities in rising non-communicable disease associated with poor diets. Following a proportional universalism perspective, income-based subsidies can mitigate the regressivity of taxation according to income. As no countries have implemented this combination of fiscal policies to improve diets, the results of this study will contribute to the scientific knowledge on the topic and will provide preliminary results to decision makers.",[28,29],"Nutrition","Food Purchasing Intention",[31,32],"Food taxation","Food subsidies","RECRUITING","2026-06-25",{"date":36,"type":37},"2026-06-30","ACTUAL",{"date":39,"type":37},"2026-06-15",{"date":41,"type":22},"2026-09-01",{"name":43,"class":44},"University of Paris 13","OTHER",1,{"id":47,"slug":48,"hasResults":11,"nctId":49,"briefTitle":50,"officialTitle":51,"acronym":52,"eligibilityCriteria":53,"healthyVolunteers":17,"sex":18,"minAge":19,"maxAge":4,"enrollmentInfo":54,"targetDuration":4,"studyType":23,"phases":56,"briefSummary":57,"conditions":58,"keywords":62,"overallStatus":33,"whyStopped":4,"lastUpdateSubmitDate":67,"lastUpdatePostDateStruct":68,"startDateStruct":70,"completionDateStruct":72,"leadSponsor":74,"locationsCount":45},"100633835","nutrition-labelling-education-program-in-socioeconomically-vulnerable-areas-100633835","NCT07531849","Nutrition Labelling Education Program in Socioeconomically Vulnerable Areas","Impact of a Brief Front-of-pack Nutrition Labelling Education Program on Self-efficacy, Food Literacy and Purchase Intentions in Socioeconomically Vulnerable Areas","PEANUTS","Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* Respondents must be aged 18\n* No formal income criterion is applied; Participants are considered as low-income (justified by the fact that the study is conducted in an area known to be socioeconomically vulnerable).\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* Subjects who are homeless\n* Subjects who depend exclusively on food aid (Subjects never engaging in grocery shopping)\n* Subjects living outside of mainland France\n* French language comprehension will be assessed at baseline using functional health literacy questions in the inclusion questionnaire. Among these schemes, interpretive systems such as Nutri-Score appear particularly promising, as their graphic design improves understanding and use compared with more complex or purely numerical formats. In France, where social inequalities in diet-related chronic diseases are pronounced, implementing and effectively using FoPLs is especially challenging in socioeconomically vulnerable areas. Seine-Saint-Denis, a department with a markedly higher prevalence of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases than the national average, offers a relevant setting to test prevention strategies embedded within routine care. The PEANUTS project is a quasi-experimental before-after interventional study conducted in primary care and hospital outpatient settings, with later extension to the social sector. It aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a brief, literacy-sensitive nutrition education program focused on on-pack nutrition information (Nutri-Score, nutrition facts panel, claims and marketing elements) on self-efficacy, food literacy and the nutritional quality of purchase intentions among adults living in vulnerable territories.",[59,60,61],"Self-Efficacy","Food Choices","Understanding of Front-of-pack Labeling",[63,64,65,66],"Nutrition education and prevention","Primary prevention","Educational program","Front of pack nutrition labelling","2026-04-13",{"date":69,"type":37},"2026-04-15",{"date":71,"type":37},"2026-01-01",{"date":73,"type":22},"2029-01-01",{"name":43,"class":44},{"id":76,"slug":77,"hasResults":11,"nctId":78,"briefTitle":79,"officialTitle":80,"acronym":4,"eligibilityCriteria":81,"healthyVolunteers":17,"sex":18,"minAge":82,"maxAge":4,"enrollmentInfo":83,"targetDuration":4,"studyType":85,"phases":4,"briefSummary":86,"conditions":87,"keywords":98,"overallStatus":33,"whyStopped":4,"lastUpdateSubmitDate":114,"lastUpdatePostDateStruct":115,"startDateStruct":117,"completionDateStruct":119,"leadSponsor":121,"locationsCount":45},"100311532","the-nutrinet-sant-study-100311532","NCT03335644","The NutriNet-Santé Study","The NutriNet-Santé Study.
