This alternative protocol consists of using RUTF instead of RUSF for the management of moderate acute malnutrition and reduced-dose RUTF instead of standard-dose RUTF for the treatment of severe acute malnutrition.

The main questions are:

1. Does treating children with uncomplicated severe acute malnutrition using a reduced dose of RUTF lead to a non-inferior programmatic and sustained recovery rate compared to the standard care with a standard dose of RUFT?

Secondly, the study will investigate the effect of this alternative protocol compared to the standard protocol on cost-effectiveness, psychomotor development, weight and linear growth and incidence of relapses.",[28],"Acute Malnutrition with No Complications",[30,31,32,33,34,35,36,37,38],"Effectiveness","acute malnutrition","management","treatment","reduced dose","Ready-to-Use Supplementary Foods","Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Foods","uncomplicated","without complication","NOT_YET_RECRUITING","2025-01-20
2025-01-24","ACTUAL
2025-05
2026-12
Institut de Recherche en Sciences de la Sante, Burkina Faso","OTHER_GOV",1
"100484292","microbiome-directed-food-for-sustained-recovery-from-acute-malnutrition-100484292","NCT05586139","Microbiome-Directed Food for Sustained Recovery From Acute Malnutrition","Efficacy of a Food Targeting the Microbiota for a Sustained Recovery of Children With Uncomplicated Acute Malnutrition","MDF","Inclusion Criteria:

* Age between 6 and 23 months
* Moderate wasting: WHZ < -2 and ≥ -3 or MUAC < 125 mm and ≥ 115mm or - Severe wasting: WHZ < -3 or MUAC < 115 mm

Exclusion Criteria:

* Bilateral pitting edema
* Not eating/lack of appetite
* Current illness medical complications requiring inpatient treatment
* Presence of any congenital abnormality or underlying chronic disease that may affect growth or risk of infection
* Known contraindication/hypersensitivity/allergy to MDCF of RUSF ingredients (chickpea flour, soy flour, banana, peanut)
* Relapse from MAM treatment or transfer from SAM treatment
* Children recently (<2 months) or enrolled in a nutrition program
* Residence outside the study area","23 Months
6200,[25],"The goal of this experimental study is to test the efficacy of a new formulation - The microbiome-directed food (MDF) to treat acute malnutrition among children aged 6 to 23 months.
