The health benefits of quitting smoking are well-documented. Healthcare professionals play a key role in the fight against smoking. Nevertheless, they are also affected by smoking, with a prevalence ranging from 16% to 43%, depending on their profession. Furthermore, their smoking status impacts how they deliver smoking cessation treatments.\n\nA randomised controlled pilot trial to compare the efficacy of combining music intervention with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) with NRT alone in managing smoking craving among 50 healthcare professionals who smoke is proposed.\n\nFurthermore, given that the risk of relapse exceeds 50% in the first 12 months after quitting smoking and that this has harmful consequences for patients, this study also aims to identify predictors of successful cessation. In an ancillary study, the MUSICAT-BIO project, the association between successful cessation and both the gut microbiota and epigenetic regulation of BDNF is evaluated. Due to the limited available literature, a group of non-smoking volunteers is included in this study to enable comparison of the gut microbiota and BDNF epigenetic regulation between: 1) smokers and non-smokers; 2) abstinent and active smokers; and 3) abstinent smokers and non-smokers.",[28,29,30,31],"Nicotine Replacement Therapy","Healthcare Professionals","Tobacco Craving","Tabacco Cessation",[33,34],"Craving","Music therapy","NOT_YET_RECRUITING","2026-02-11",{"date":38,"type":39},"2026-02-17","ACTUAL",{"date":41,"type":22},"2026-03-01",{"date":43,"type":22},"2030-02-01",{"name":45,"class":46},"Poitiers University Hospital","OTHER",1,{"id":49,"slug":50,"hasResults":11,"nctId":51,"briefTitle":52,"officialTitle":53,"acronym":4,"eligibilityCriteria":54,"healthyVolunteers":11,"sex":18,"minAge":19,"maxAge":4,"enrollmentInfo":55,"targetDuration":4,"studyType":23,"phases":57,"briefSummary":59,"conditions":60,"keywords":65,"overallStatus":70,"whyStopped":4,"lastUpdateSubmitDate":71,"lastUpdatePostDateStruct":72,"startDateStruct":74,"completionDateStruct":76,"leadSponsor":78,"locationsCount":47},"100535605","phase-4-effectiveness-of-combined-tobacco-treatment-in-hospitalized-subjects-100535605","NCT06254001","Effectiveness of Combined Tobacco Treatment in Hospitalized Subjects","Effectiveness of Combined Treatment of Bupropion and Nicotine Replacement Therapy in Hospitalized Subjects With Active Smoking in a Reference Center","Inclusion Criteria:\n\n\\>18 years Active smokers (consumption of more than 100 cigarettes in their entire life, and who have consumed cigarettes in the last 30 days) Hospitalized subjects Informed consent\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* Subjects who have had pharmacological treatment to stop smoking in the last month\n* Subjects with contraindications for medications.\n\nSample size calculation, 80% power, unilateral, due to difference in proportions, estimated loss of 25%.",{"count":56,"type":22},134,[58],"PHASE4","In the 20th century, tobacco caused the death of 100 million people worldwide and it is estimated that it will be responsible for 1 billion deaths in the 21st century. Currently 8 million people die each year from smoking, 7 million are associated with active smoking, thus being the main risk factor for loss of disability-adjusted life years for men and the ninth most important risk factor for women. In previous studies it has been reported that approximately 21% (14%-30%) of subjects who have required hospitalization are active smokers, being higher in men than in women (28% vs 14%). The initiation of treatment for smoking cessation in this group of subjects has shown an effectiveness rate of up to 65% to maintain abstinence 6 to 12 months after discharge. The effectiveness has been analyzed in scenarios with only brief advice, in some others with the use of medications such as varenicline, bupropion and nicotine replacement therapy, however, the interventions have not been standardized for adequate analysis, which could contribute to the different results.",[61,62,63,64,28],"Tobacco Smoking","Tobacco Withdrawal","Nicotine Addiction","Nicotine Withdrawal",[66,67,68,69],"tobacco","bupropion","nicotine replacement therapy","abstinence","RECRUITING","2024-02-21",{"date":73,"type":39},"2024-02-23",{"date":75,"type":39},"2024-01-15",{"date":77,"type":22},"2026-06-15",{"name":79,"class":80},"National Institute of Respiratory Diseases, Mexico","OTHER_GOV"]
