It is expected that disability has a significant impact on body composition, including reductions in lean mass and bone mineral content, and increases in fat mass and its distribution. Additionally, the assessment of food and dietary supplement intake among athletes with disabilities remains poorly described, despite its relevance in both sports and health contexts due to the potential benefits of individualized nutritional strategies.\n\nThis research project, entitled Anthropometric, Dietary, Exercise, and Supplementation Profile in Athletes with Disabilities (PADES), aims to describe the anthropometric characteristics, physical exercise practices, and food and supplement intake in Spanish athletes with disabilities. The study seeks to address the current lack of standardized anthropometric data and the limited information on dietary and supplementation patterns in this population, which hinders a comprehensive understanding of the physiological, nutritional, and biomechanical aspects essential for their health and athletic performance. The study also aims to learn how different amounts of maple syrup affect energy use in the body, stomach comfort, and feelings of effort and fatigue.\n\nThe main questions the study aims to answer are:\n\n* Does consuming more carbohydrate from maple syrup help participants finish a 20-kilometer cycling time trial faster?\n* How do different amounts of maple syrup change how the body uses carbohydrates and fats during long exercise?\n* Are higher amounts of maple syrup easy for participants to tolerate without stomach problems?\n\nResearchers will compare four drinks:\n\n1. A placebo drink (a look-alike drink with no calories),\n2. A drink that provides 60 grams of carbohydrate per hour,\n3. A drink that provides 90 grams per hour, and\n4. A drink that provides 120 grams per hour.\n\nThey will compare these drinks to see whether higher carbohydrate amounts lead to better cycling performance and how each dose affects comfort and metabolism.\n\nParticipants will:\n\n* Attend a screening visit that includes a health check and a glucose tolerance test.\n* Complete a fitness test to measure their aerobic capacity and practice the cycling tests used in the study.\n* Take part in four separate exercise sessions in random order. Each session includes:\n* Drinking one of the four study beverages during 2 hours of steady cycling,\n* Completing two short, all-out 6-second sprints during the ride,\n* Completing a 20-kilometer cycling time trial as fast as possible,\n* Reporting stomach symptoms and perceptions of effort,\n* Providing breath, blood, urine, and sweat samples so researchers can measure how their body uses fuel.\n\nAll drinks will look, taste, and smell similar so participants cannot tell which one they are receiving. Meals before each session will be provided to keep conditions the same across visits.\n\nThis study may help athletes and active people choose natural carbohydrate sources that support both performance and comfort during long endurance exercise.
