Lifestyle Advice in CVD

Individuals living in the UK who are from ethnic minority communities have a higher risk of heart disease and strokes than white individuals. This risk arises from the social determinants of health. These include lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity and smoking. Improving these lifestyle factors in individuals is an essential part of reducing the chances of heart attacks and stroke. Patients may have diets and lifestyles arising from their cultural and religious backgrounds but receive advice which is not aligned to their own customs and experiences. Receiving advice which is not relevant to their own types of diet and lifestyle customs may create difficulties for patients in managing their heart and circulation health. Moreover, the dissonance between advice given and patient-specific relevance may lead to poorer adherence to the recommendations made to manage their condition. This can lead to poorer health outcomes for these patients. In addition, they may be advised to adopt diets and behaviours which are not appropriate to their cultures and may be also difficult to put into practice. This is important because lifestyle advice aligned to a patient's existing diet, behaviours and cultural beliefs leads to improved control of these health conditions. Learning to provide dietary and lifestyle advice relevant to individual patients needs is an important skill for the clinicians caring for them.

Regular Diet After Colorectal Surgery

The goal of this pilot study is to assess the safety and feasibility of regular diet after surgical removal of the colon. The study will enroll patients preoperatively, prior to colon surgery, and will follow participants for up to 30 days. The study hypothesizes that simplifying nutritional recommendations is safe and may improve quality of life.

Effects of High-Fiber Diet on Gut Microbiota, Metabolism, and Immune Microenvironment in Solid Tumor Patients: A Clinical Study

Cancer remains a major global public-health challenge and a central focus of medical research. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC, 2020), 19.29 million new malignant tumors and 9.96 million cancer deaths occurred worldwide, \>90 % being solid cancers. Lung cancer alone accounted for 2.2 million new cases and 1.8 million deaths; \>75 % of patients were already at an advanced stage at diagnosis. Current options for late-stage solid tumors are limited: surgery is often impossible because of metastasis; cytotoxic chemotherapy produces dose-limiting toxicities (grade Ⅲ-Ⅳ myelosuppression 15-40 %, mucositis 50-80 %); radiotherapy risks pneumonitis (5-15 %) or enteritis (5-20 %) when tumors abut vital organs; targeted agents succumb to acquired resistance after a median 9-13 months; and immune-checkpoint inhibitors achieve \<40 % objective response with 7-15 % grade 3-4 immune-related adverse events. Dietary intervention is therefore emerging as a promising adjunct. Dietary fibre protects against cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, yet intake is universally low. WHO and the Chinese Nutrition Society recommend 25-30 g total fibre per day (≈15-21 g insoluble), whereas Chinese adults consume only \~11 g insoluble fibre. High-fibre diets reshape gut microbiota, augment short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, strengthen intestinal barrier function, activate CD8⁺ T cells and dampen regulatory T cells, thereby enhancing anti-tumour immunity. A melanoma cohort showed improved progression-free survival under immunotherapy when fibre intake was high. Similar microbiota-immune axes may operate in colorectal and other solid cancers, but clinical data are scarce. We therefore propose a study to examine whether a high-insoluble-fibre diet (\>21 g/day) modulates gut-microbiota composition, metabolite profiles and peripheral-blood immune subsets in solid-tumour patients, and to evaluate consequent effects on treatment response and quality of life. The findings will clarify whether fibre-driven microbiota-immune crosstalk can be harnessed as a personalised nutritional strategy to improve cancer outcomes.

Body Composition and Lifestyles in Athletes With Disabilities

Disability involves limitations that affect mobility and the ability to perform daily activities and achieve competitive goals. It is expected that disability has a significant impact on body composition, including reductions in lean mass and bone mineral content, and increases in fat mass and its distribution. Additionally, the assessment of food and dietary supplement intake among athletes with disabilities remains poorly described, despite its relevance in both sports and health contexts due to the potential benefits of individualized nutritional strategies. This research project, entitled Anthropometric, Dietary, Exercise, and Supplementation Profile in Athletes with Disabilities (PADES), aims to describe the anthropometric characteristics, physical exercise practices, and food and supplement intake in Spanish athletes with disabilities. The study seeks to address the current lack of standardized anthropometric data and the limited information on dietary and supplementation patterns in this population, which hinders a comprehensive understanding of the physiological, nutritional, and biomechanical aspects essential for their health and athletic performance. A cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational study will be conducted in Spanish athletes with disabilities recruited through the Spanish Federation of Sports for People with Physical Disabilities (FEDDF), the Spanish Federation of Sports for the Blind (FEDC), and the Spanish Federation of Sports for the Deaf (FEDS).

School Meals in Denmark

This study looks at how a national school meal program affects the health, well-being, and learning of Danish schoolchildren aged 10 to 15 years. The study is part of the Danish National School Meal Pilot Program (2025-2028), which provides free school meals at selected public schools. Some school classes receive free school meals, while other classes do not and are used for comparison. Children are followed for about 1.5 years. Information is collected before and after the program using simple health measurements, questionnaires about well-being, and age-appropriate cognitive tests. The study also uses information from Danish national registers to better understand the children's background and to study longer-term outcomes related to health, education, and social conditions. In addition, the study examines whether school meal programs are cost-effective by comparing their costs with potential benefits for children and society. The goal of the study is to find out whether free school meals can improve children's health, well-being, and learning, and help reduce social differences.

This is a controlled, randomized and multicentric clinical trial aimed at university students and performed at the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy at the University of Seville (Spain). Its objective is to evaluate the effect of an intervention based on the use of an information and communication technology (ICT) tool, specifically an application for mobile telephones (called e-12HR), in the improvement of adherence to the Mediterranean diet.
