Investigating the Effect of Caffeine and Alcohol on Pupil Dynamics

The goal of this study is to understand how caffeine and alcohol affect the ocular and physiological systems, especially how the pupil (the aperture in the colored part of the eye) responds to light. It will also test whether these changes can be used to detect recent caffeine or alcohol intake using a portable eye device. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1. How does caffeine change pupil responses, eye movements, and other ocular and physiological measurements? 2. How does alcohol change these same ocular and physiological responses? 3. Are the effects of caffeine and alcohol different from each other? 4. Can these changes be used to accurately identify whether someone has consumed caffeine or alcohol? Researchers will compare caffeine, alcohol, and a placebo (a look-alike drink with no active substance) to see how each affects the ocular and physiological outcomes. Participants will: 1. Attend three separate sessions where they will consume caffeine, alcohol, or a placebo (in random order) 2. Undergo pupillary response evaluation using a handheld device that measures responses to different colored light stimuli 3. Have their eye movements analyzed 4. Have retinal and choroidal thickness, blood perfusion, and ocular oxygen levels measured 5. Have basic body measurements recorded (such as pulse rate and blood pressure) 6. Complete tests at multiple time points over 2 hours after consumption The results of this study may help develop a quick and non-invasive way to detect recent caffeine or alcohol use for clinical and safety purposes.

An Investigation of Attentional and Inhibitory Processes During Active Visual Search in Humans

The goal of this study is to investigate the finding that there are large individual differences in how participants move their eyes during active visual search. For example, some individuals tend to fixate, that is point their eyes steadily at a single location, for longer than other individuals before moving to another location. This experiment will use behavioral tasks to measure an individual's attentional and inhibitory functioning, and then see how each of these contributes to between-participant variability in eye movement behavior during visual search.

Neuro-Mimic Indicators of Anesthesia Depth During General Anesthesia

This prospective observational study will evaluate neuro-mimic indicators of anesthesia depth, including eyelid reflex, eyeball movements, and pupil responses, in patients undergoing elective surgery under general anesthesia. Sixty adult patients will be observed at three standardized time points: after induction, during skin incision, and mid-surgery. All parameters will be recorded alongside bispectral index (BIS) monitoring. The study aims to determine whether these observable signs correlate with anesthesia depth, contribute to early detection of intraoperative awareness, and provide a basis for developing non-invasive depth monitoring systems.

Characterization of Mentalization Profiles Related to Emotional Regulation Among Teenagers With Behavioral Disorders

Behavioral disorders in adolescents are defined by a set of diverse behaviors (such as aggressiveness, agitation, clastic crisis, running away and endangerment) whose common characteristic is the predominance of action/ mentalization. These disorders are associated with significant morbidity and high mortality linked to a high rate of suicide or attempted suicide. Behavioral disorders are also associated with an alteration of mentalizing capacities, that is the psychic process by which the adolescent imagines and interprets his behavior and that of others on the basis of mental states such as needs, desires, beliefs or feelings. The disorders are also associated with emotional dysregulation. To date, the psychopathological processes underlying behavioral disorders in adolescents are unknown and prevent from offering appropriate psychological care. Thus, it seems essential to characterize this clinical population by integrating both its intrapsychic representations and the physiological parameters of emotional regulation associated with it. This project is a first step towards a larger-scale research project aimed at evaluating treatment by TBM (therapies based on mentalization) in adolescents with behavioral disorders.
