Glucose Metabolism Disorders (Including Diabetes Mellitus)

The purpose of this research study is to test the accuracy of the Dexcom continuous glucose monitoring device during the cardiothoracic surgical procedure and recovery period in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. Readings from the device will be compared with the standard of care blood glucose levels that are obtained during your surgery and postoperatively.

This study is First In Human study for Encapsulated Porcine Islet Cells for Xenotransplantation (OPF-310). The purpose of this study to assess the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of OPF-310 transplantation and to define the recommended Phase 2 dose (RP2D) in adult subjects with unstable Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) and a level 3 (severe) hypoglycemic episode at least three times within the 1 year prior to enrollment despite treatment with a closed loop system (CLS) for at least 6 months.

The investigators will conduct a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to examine how an online training and peer support platform could help the preparation to transition to adult care. Among 14-16 year old youth with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), the investigators aim to assess the effect of an online training and peer support platform (Support-t) integrated in usual care, compared with usual care on Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), adverse outcomes and psychosocial measures during the preparation for transition to adult care. The investigators will conduct a multi-site, parallel group, blinded (outcome assessors, data analysts), superiority RCT of adolescents with T1D (14-16 years of age) followed at one of 4 university teaching hospital-based pediatric diabetes clinics in the province of Quebec.

The digestion of carbohydrates begins in the mouth through the salivary enzyme amylase which breaks food starches into maltose and disaccharides. The mouth also has a large community of microorganisms which include bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa that can also assist in the digestion of carbohydrates. Mouthwashes containing antibacterial compounds such as chlorhexidine are used to kill oral bacteria, but current evidence indicates that a majority of these bacteria are essential for human health. The aim of this study is to investigate whether chlorhexidine mouthwash can also affect the digestion of carbohydrates. At least 25 individuals will be recruited. Participants will visit the laboratory in two occasions. A saliva and blood sample (fingertip to measure blood glucose) will be taken at baseline. Then, using a randomized, cross-over and double-blind design, the participants will rinse their mouth for two minutes with a placebo or chlorhexidine mouthwash. Then, participants will eat 50 g of white bread and blood glucose will be measured (fingertips) every 30 min for the following 2 hours. Another saliva sample will be collected at the end of each test.

This study examines the association of variability in glucose values over a 10-day period with cognitive function and functional status among individuals with prediabetes, aged 50 or older.
