Fasting Time and Post-tonsillectomy Pain

This is a prospective, observational study to determine the association between preoperative fasting duration and post-tonsillectomy pain scores in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) among pediatric patients undergoing tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy and/or tympanostomy tube placement. The primary outcome is the post-tonsillectomy pain score, with the secondary outcomes as total postoperative opioid consumption, PACU length of stay, and hospital length of stay.

Pulse Oximetry Accuracy by Skin Color

This is a prospective, non-randomized, non-blinded comparative study to evaluate the accuracy of pulse oximetry compared to co-oximetry in dark-skinned (Black) compared to lighter-skinned (White) children undergoing anesthesia, using standard FDA performance statistics as measured by mean bias and accuracy root mean squared to evaluate device performance.

Health Literacy in the Perioperative Setting

The purpose of this study is to determine the association of the social determinants of health with perioperative health literacy in caregivers of children presenting for surgery. Another purpose is to determine the association of caregiver health literacy with preoperative caregiver anxiety and postoperative patient pain scores.

The purpose of this study is to describe the digital literacy of caregivers of pediatric surgical patients. The investigators hypothesize that caregivers of minority race, language of care other than English, and low neighborhood opportunity will have lower prevalence of digital literacy.
