Evaluation of Adverse Effects Related to Prescribed Medications in a Periodontology Clinic

Various pharmacological treatment approaches, primarily antibiotics, analgesics, and antiseptic agents, are frequently used in the treatment of periodontal diseases. While these drugs are important for the clinical effectiveness of periodontal treatment, drug-related side effects can negatively impact patient compliance, quality of life, and overall patient safety, and in some cases, may lead to premature termination of treatment. Early identification of drug-related side effects, assessment of causality, and classification of severity form the basis of pharmacovigilance practices. In this context, the Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS), run by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is an important data source for detecting drug-related side effects and presenting safety signals. Large databases like FAERS draw attention to potential drug-related side effects and provide valuable information on drug safety. However, this data is largely based on patient/user or physician feedback, and these systems are insufficient to assess the true frequency, clinical severity, and impact on patients' quality of life of side effects. Side effects related to medications prescribed in periodontology clinics are often considered mild or transient, thus limiting systematic feedback based on real-life data. Therefore, systematic and patient-centered clinical studies using standard algorithms and scales based on real-life data are needed. This study aims to determine the frequency of side effects related to medications prescribed in a periodontology clinic over an 18-month period and to evaluate them according to gender and age. As a secondary aim, it aims to evaluate the causal relationship of these side effects with the medications, their clinical severity, and their impact on patients' quality of life related to oral health using a holistic approach. This will ensure that not only the presence of side effects but also clinical and patient-centered outcomes are presented in an objective, standardized, and reproducible manner.

The Effect of Mandala Art Therapy, Psychological Resilience, Coping With Cancer, Colorectal Cancer Surgery

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of mandala art therapy on psychological resilience and coping with cancer in patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery. This study was conducted as a randomized controlled trial with a pre-test-post-test design, including intervention and control groups. The study will be conducted between January 2026 and December 2026 with patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery. The G.power 3.1.9.7 program was used for sample size calculation. The sample size was determined as 28 individuals in each group, considering equal sample sizes in the experimental and control groups, a 95% confidence interval (type I error 5%), and statistical power of 80% (type II error 20%) with an effect size of d=0.50. However, considering a possible 20% data loss, 35 individuals will be included in each group, resulting in a total sample size of 70 individuals. Sample selection will be made using sequential sampling according to inclusion criteria. Patients will then be randomly assigned to the experimental group (A) and the control group (B) using block randomization (four-block). First, 15 blocks of four, such as AABB, ABAB, ABBA, BBAA, BABA, BAAB, etc., will be prepared by the researcher and statistician. Individuals will then be divided into two groups according to the prepared list; this process will be repeated continuously until the sample size is complete. Three data collection forms were used. SPSS 22.00 software package was used for data analysis. Skewness and kurtosis analyses were performed to determine the normality of the data distribution. Frequency (n) and percentage (%) distributions were calculated to determine the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the participants. Independent samples t-test was used to determine the mean differences between two independent groups, dependent samples t-test was used to compare pre- and post-intervention measurements, and repeated measures one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used. Cohen's d effect size was calculated to evaluate the significance of the difference between groups in terms of the intervention. The statistical significance level was accepted as p\<0.05.

Effects of Core Stabilization Exercises in Female Patients With Gonarthrosis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a non-inflammatory degenerative disease characterized by progressive deterioration of cartilage tissue, synovial membrane, and joint capsule, primarily affecting weight-bearing joints. Individuals with knee osteoarthritis exhibit weakness in the trunk and periarticular muscles. This loss of strength in the trunk and periarticular muscles increases the load on the joint, contributing to the development and progression of the disease. This study aimed to investigate the effects of core stabilization, applied in addition to knee muscle exercise programs, on clinical symptoms and functional capacity in individuals with knee osteoarthritis.

Impact of Medication Education on Adherence and Side Effects

Severe mental disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and psychotic depression often require long-term or lifelong medication treatment. However, many psychiatric patients have difficulty adhering to their prescribed medication regimens due to factors such as lack of information, fear of side effects, and negative experiences with psychotropic medications. Poor treatment adherence is associated with symptom relapse, prolonged hospitalization, increased rehospitalization rates, reduced quality of life, and higher health care costs. Medication education is a key psychosocial intervention aimed at improving patients' understanding of their illness, treatment process, and potential medication side effects. Providing structured medication education may enhance treatment adherence and help patients recognize and manage side effects more effectively. This intervention study aims to evaluate the effect of a structured medication education program on treatment adherence and medication-related side effects among psychotic inpatients hospitalized in a psychiatric clinic, including patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, schizophreniform disorder, bipolar disorder with psychotic features, and major depressive disorder with psychotic features. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the development of effective psychosocial interventions to improve medication adherence and treatment outcomes in psychiatric inpatient settings.
