Self-Care Program and Burnout Prevention in First-Year Medical Oncology Residents (Mixed-Methods Quasi-Experimental Study)

Burnout is highly prevalent among oncology clinicians, including residents in training. This prospective, mixed-methods, quasi-experimental study will evaluate how burnout changes over 12 months during the first year of medical oncology residency and explore which work-related, professional identity, and program support factors influence this variation. Residents will participate in a structured self-care and burnout prevention program with multiple modules (e.g., yoga, mindfulness, art therapy, music therapy, Balint groups, workshops, mentorship). Quantitative burnout outcomes will be measured using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-HSS), and qualitative insights will be collected through individual semi-structured interviews. The study will also describe sociodemographic characteristics, baseline burnout prevalence, participation/adherence, satisfaction, and implementation barriers/facilitators.

ONCO-RET: Supervised Resistance Training During Total Neoadjuvant Therapy for Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer is a major cause of cancer death in Chile. Many people with rectal cancer that has grown into nearby tissues receive chemotherapy and radiation before surgery. These treatments can cause tiredness and loss of muscle, which may make it harder for patients to complete treatment. This study will look at whether a supervised strength-training exercise program is practical and safe during treatment before surgery. Participants will do a personalized strength-training program two times per week. The program will start when cancer treatment begins and will continue until surgery (about 24 weeks). The study will measure how practical the program is by looking at how many people join the study, stay in the study, and attend the exercise sessions, and whether the study team can collect all planned information. The study will also track any problems or side effects related to exercise. The study will also explore whether the exercise program may help maintain muscle, improve strength and physical function, improve quality of life, reduce fatigue, and affect how the tumor responds to treatment. These results will be compared with information from similar patients previously treated at the same hospital.

CALM Psychotherapy in Patients With Metastatic Cancer in Chile

Patients with metastatic cancer experience multidimensional challenges that increase the risk of emotional distress, which must be addressed by the health team. Chile lacks evidence on effective therapeutic interventions in this population. CALM is a brief, individual (with the presence of a caregiver in one or more sessions) and evidence-based psychotherapy developed at The Princess Margaret Cancer Center. It consists of an intervention of 3 to 6 psychotherapy sessions over a period of 3 to 6 months. The Global CALM program aims to expand CALM research around the world, a program to which FALP has subscribed. Objective: To evaluate the preliminary efficacy of CALM in a sample of patients with metastatic cancer in Chile. Phase 2 study of preliminary, pseudo-experimental efficacy, without a control group. The study will be carried out in Falp and Corporación Valientes.
