Nen ŨnkUmbi/EdaHiYedo Plus (We Are Here Now Plus): a Multi-level Intervention to Reduce Health Disparities Among American Indian Youth

We Are Here Now - Plus (NE+) is a holistic, culturally centered, and multilevel intervention for American Indian youth to improve sexual health, mental health, and substance use outcomes. The goal of this intervention is to learn if NE+ can decrease substance use during sex, decrease sexual activity, increase condom use, increase positive mental health, increase caregiver(parent)-youth communication, increase communication between school personnel and youth, and increase utilization of clinical services. Researchers will compare one intervention arm to one control arm to see if the aforementioned indicators improve among the intervention arm for youth participants. Youth participants (ages 12-18) will participate in a 9-month educational program consisting of 18 modules that discuss healthy relationships, puberty \& physiology (separate girls \& boys), parenting, pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevention, sexual avoidant behaviors with a focus on abstinence, substance use prevention with a focus on abstinence and refusal skills, \& positive mental health, resources; skills (high school)- self-efficacy, refusal skills, decision making, communication, abstinence; skills (middle school) - health knowledge, self-efficacy, boundaries, communication, abstinence. Youth will also participate in six teachings offered by local cultural leaders that coincide with educational modules, including: kinship networks \& family; cultural values; 7 sacred roles of tribal members; ceremonies; cultural teachings and responsibilities of women \& men in tribe \& ceremonies; Indigenous worldview; skills - knowledge of traditional ways, language \& cultural people to go to for help; community members roles \& responsibilities in tribe \& ceremonies. Caregiver (parent) participants will participate in three in-person visits/meetings to discuss the following: visit 1 - age specific physical, cognitive, emotional, spiritual development; visit 2: prevention of substance use, promoting positive mental health, promotion of healthy relationships; skills -communication with youth; visit 3 - pregnancy and STIs/HIV prevention and abstinence from sex, parental monitoring, tribal resources. School personnel participants will participate in three workshops during teacher in-service training days, including the following information: Workshop 1 - cultural teachings on kinship \& family networks, cultural values, cultural age \& community roles; Workshop 2 - sexual risk avoidant behaviors, substance use prevention, positive mental health promotion, pregnancy STIs/HIV prevention, tribal resources; Workshop 3 - culturally respectful communication skills by age \& youth (boy/girl) and age \& caregiver (male/female); skills - knowledge of cultural ways, substance use prevention, positive mental health promotion, sexual risk avoidant behaviors, culturally respectful communication.

Impact of Haskap Berries on Recovery From High Intensity Resistance Training

The purpose of this clinical trial is to determine how certain food items affect oxidative stress, inflammation, and performance recovery from exercise induced muscle damage in a resistance trained population. The main questions The investigators aim to answer are the following: * Do Haskaps speed the recovery of oxidative stress and inflammation markers after an intense lower body workout in resistance trained adults? * Do Haskaps speed the recovery of performance measures after an intense lower body workout in resistance trained adults? * The data collected in this investigation may also be used to ask additional questions not yet identified. For example, the investigators may use the stored samples to evaluate how the blood metabolites of participants differ before and after intense exercise. These additional questions are called secondary analyses. Please note that no genetic analysis will be conducted and racial and ethnic differences among participants will not be used in any secondary analyses. Researches will compare Haskap juice to a color, flavor and carbohydrate matched placebo to see if Haskaps speed recovery in inflammation, oxidative stress and performance. * Participants will be asked to drink either Haskap juice or placebo and follow a low polyphenolic diet * Participants will perform an intense resistance workout * Participants will have their blood drawn before and after the workout * Performance will be analyzed at 24, 48 and 72 hours after the workout

Rural Autistic Individuals - Supporting Expression

This research study investigates how hand gestures can support language comprehension and communication skills of hearing speaking, non-speaking, and/or minimally verbal individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), who are especially disadvantaged by the lack of accessible services in their rural communities. Individuals with other cognitive profiles, including Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), ADHD, Dyslexia, and others are welcome too. The study uses methods of eye tracking and recording of brain activity to understand how hand gestures adapted from signs from American Sign Language, such as \[cry\], can promote successful understanding of words like "cry". The overarching goal is to help families effectively utilize gestures to support communication with their children.

Gut Microbiota-dependent Health Impacts of Haskap Berries

Polyphenol-rich Haskap berries (Haskap) have untapped therapeutic potential to improve human health, and agricultural producers in northern U.S. states are poised to increase production if consumer demand increases. A critical knowledge gap is that little is known about the interactions between gut microbes and Haskap polyphenols to produce bioactive metabolites linked to downstream health impacts. Additionally, little is known about which Haskap varieties and harvest timing yield the greatest bioactive potential. This study aims to address these gaps by investigating the interaction of bioactive components in Haskap with gut microbiota and the resultant gut and serum metabolites, inflammation, and metabolic health, and then couple this with analysis of berries from different Haskap varieties and harvest times.

Trauma and Cardiometabolic Health in an American Indian Community

Volunteers for the study are asked to participate in two laboratory sessions. In the first laboratory session, volunteers are asked to provide a blood sample which will be used to measure factors related to health. Participants also complete questionnaires related to demographic and health-related information and undergo evaluations of their body composition. In the second laboratory visit, participants are asked to have cardiovascular, neuroendocrine, and inflammatory activity measured during a brief period of rest and during a short challenging psychological task. Participants will also complete questionnaires. The study is designed to examine the associations between experiences such as trauma and resiliency with changes in bodily systems during a challenge and current health.
