ADHD&me: Targeting Self-esteem in Youth With ADHD

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn whether the ADHD\&me (ADHD\&ik) intervention can improve self-esteem in youth aged 16-25 years with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The ADHD\&me program is a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based intervention designed to help people with ADHD to develop a more positive view of themselves in their transition to adulthood. The main questions it aims to answer are: * Does the ADHD\&me intervention improve self-esteem in youth with ADHD, and are these effects maintained over time? * Does the intervention also improve related outcomes, such as masking of ADHD-related behaviors and co-occurring mental health symptoms including anxiety, depression, and stress? In this RCT, participants are assigned either to immediate treatment or to a waitlist control condition, with the latter receiving the intervention after an eight-week delay. Participants will: * Take part in seven individual therapy sessions according to the ADHD\&me intervention. * Complete questionnaires about self-esteem, masking of ADHD-related behaviors, ADHD symptoms, and co-ccurring mental health symptoms at several time points. * Complete short daily assessments (ecological momentary assessment) during one week at the start of the study and one week after the intervention or waitlist period to report momentary self-esteem, emotions, distress, and activities.

Prepare the Mind: Can Coaching in Goal-directed Behaviour Increase the Success of Cognitive Rehabilitation in People With MS?

People with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) often experience cognitive difficulties such as memory problems, concentration issues, and reduced processing speed. These symptoms can have a negative impact on daily functioning and overall quality of life. Previous research on cognitive rehabilitation has shown that regular training focused on memory and concentration can have positive effects on cognitive functioning, including processing speed, memory, and executive functions that support daily activities. Moreover, fMRI studies (brain scans that measure brain activity) have revealed changes in brain activation following cognitive rehabilitation. Recently, the idea has emerged that a more personalized approach could improve treatment outcomes. Specifically, researchers have identified a link between personality traits and cognitive functioning. Since every individual is different, current cognitive rehabilitation programs often fail to take these personal differences into account. In this project, the investigators aim to enhance the effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation by focusing more closely on individual characteristics through an app-based training program. Participants will complete a 12-week app training prior to a 6-week cognitive rehabilitation program. The first app focuses on mindset training, supported by a coach. Afterwards, all participants will use a second app designed to train processing speed and memory. In addition to cognitive functioning, the investigators will also examine psychological, (neuro)biological, and social changes using questionnaires and fMRI. This research may provide valuable insights into how cognitive functioning and quality of life in people with MS can be improved. This study is funded by the National MS Fund and is a collaboration between several institutions: the Department of Health, Medical and Neuropsychology at Leiden University (The Netherlands), the University at Buffalo (USA), and Reha Rheinfelden (Switzerland).

RCT: the Effectiveness of LifeHack in Improving Mental Wellbeing in University Students.

Psychological issues are common among university students and affect mental wellbeing. The Caring Universities (CU) project, involving nine Dutch universities, aims to enhance students' mental health through an annual online questionnaire and a platform offering guided eHealth interventions. One intervention, LifeHack, utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy-based modules to improve mental wellbeing by enhancing resilience and life skills. The effects of LifeHack with pre-post measurements (total n = 216 at post-test) found found that LifeHack led to improvements in mental wellbeing, but dropout rates were influenced by lack of motivation and module relevance. A personalized version of LifeHack is being developed to address these issues and will be evaluated in an RCT to assess its effectiveness in improving mental wellbeing and related outcomes among university students.

Reducing Itch With Hypnosis and Virtual Reality

Chronic itch is a disabling condition with currently limited treatment options. Virtual reality (VR) is a relatively new approach that provides immersion in another environment and has been shown to have a temporary itch mitigating potential. Hypnosis, which is a state of relaxation, has been successfully applied with more long-term treatment effects in the specific case of itch as a result of severe atopic dermatitis. However, hypnosis tends to depend on an individual's susceptibility, or ease, to come into a hypnotic state. A combination of VR and hypnosis (VRH) has been put forward since it may combine the longer lasting effects of hypnosis with VR making the hypnosis more accessible by facilitating imagination. Even though VRH is a promising avenue, it has never been investigated in the context of itch. In this randomized controlled trial, comparing a VRH treatment with a waiting list control group after 6 sessions and at follow-up, it is aimed to assess the effectiveness of VRH in reducing itch along with its psychological burden in adult individuals with therapy-resistant disabling itch.

BioClock: Bright Light Therapy for Depressive Disorders

Bright Light Therapy (BLT) is a proven treatment for depression in seasonal and non-seasonal depressive disorders, as well as bipolar disorder. To make BLT more effective and practical in clinical settings and tailor it to individual needs, it is necessary to optimize the treatment approach, understand how the treatment works, and identify patient characteristics that predict response. This clinical trial has three main goals: * Optimize the administration of BLT for patients with depressive episodes. * Gain a deeper understanding of the treatment mechanisms. * Determine which patients benefit the most from the treatment. The specific objectives are as follows: * Investigate whether additional treatments and interventions related to lifestyle and the biological clock can enhance the effects of BLT. * Examine how BLT influences the body's internal clock and sleep quality, and how these factors contribute to the outcomes. * Identify patient characteristics and behaviours that can predict treatment outcomes. * Develop a brain model to better understand the impact of BLT on the brain. In this study, patients will receive BLT with a light intensity of 10,000 lux for 30 minutes each morning over 5 consecutive days. The treatment duration will range from one to three weeks, depending on the improvement of depressive symptoms. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: * Home - Patients will receive BLT at home, following the standard guidelines for light therapy in the Netherlands. * LightCafé, fixed time: Patients will receive BLT in a café-like setting called the LightCafé, where the focus is not only on symptom improvement but also lifestyle enhancements and fostering social connections. The treatment time will be the same every day. * LightCafé, varying time: Patients will also receive BLT at the LightCafé, with treatment timing varying each day. Additionally, this group will wear glasses in the evening that filter blue light. The study includes a baseline phase of up to two weeks, a treatment phase of up to three weeks, and a three-month follow-up phase. Patients will wear a motion watch to assess sleep-wake behaviour and physical activity during the day. Additionally, they will wear a broach that measures their personal light exposure throughout the day. Eight one-minute questionnaires per day will be sent to the participants' smartphones to assess vitality, sleep, and mood during the treatment. Predictors of treatment response, such as clinical characteristics, sleep measures, circadian parameters, and light-related behaviours, will be evaluated at baseline. In a small group of patients, salivary melatonin curves will be assessed before and after treatment. MRI scans will provide insights into functional and structural brain changes following light therapy treatment.
