Relational Music Therapy Procedural Support for Paediatric Patients and Families Facing Repeated Invasive Procedures

This study explores how personalised music therapy can support children and their parents during repeated medical procedures, such as blood tests or injections. Many children find these procedures painful or frightening, and repeated experiences can lead to high anxiety and difficulty coping. Parents often feel distressed as well, which can affect how well they are able to support their child. Because children and parents regulate each other emotionally, helping both members of the pair is important for reducing distress. This study aims to explore how personalised music therapy-based procedural support (MTPS) influences the relational and emotional processes that help children and their parents cope, regulate, and build resilience during repeated medical procedures.

Effects of Music Therapy in Chronic Neck Pain

This study aims to investigate the effects of music therapy on pain, cervical position sense, and balance in individuals with chronic neck pain. Chronic neck pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder that may impair proprioception and postural control, negatively affecting daily functioning and quality of life. Music therapy is a safe, low-cost, and non-pharmacological intervention with potential benefits for pain management and sensorimotor function; however, evidence regarding its effects in musculoskeletal rehabilitation is limited. In this study, nineteen individuals with chronic neck pain will listen to instrumental Turkish Classical Music in the Nihavend mode for 60 minutes. Pain intensity, cervical position sense, and static and dynamic balance will be assessed before and after the intervention. The findings are expected to provide evidence for the clinical use of music therapy as an adjunctive treatment in chronic neck pain rehabilitation.

Music Therapy to Reduce Anxiety and Pain in Chronic Pain Patients During Procedures

This study aims to find out whether listening to music before, during, and after pain procedures can help reduce anxiety, pain catastrophising, and acute pain in patients with chronic pain. Music therapy may provide a simple, safe, and non-drug way to help patients relax and feel more comfortable. In this study, adult patients with chronic pain who are scheduled for interventional pain procedures at Singapore General Hospital will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group will listen to self-selected music through headphones and speakers before, during, and after the procedure. The other group will receive standard care without music. Researchers will measure anxiety, pain catastrophising, and pain levels before and after the procedure using validated questionnaires. The main outcome will be the level of anxiety after the procedure. Other outcomes include pain catastrophising scores, pain scores during local anaesthetic injection, and overall patient satisfaction. This study will help determine if music therapy can be routinely used to improve comfort and emotional well-being for patients undergoing interventional pain procedures.

Use of Augmented Reality Glasses and Noise-Cancelling Headphones to Reduce Dental Anxiety in Adult Patients

This study investigates whether new audiovisual technologies can help reduce anxiety and stress experienced by adult patients during dental procedures. Dental fear and anxiety are common barriers to receiving proper oral care. This randomized controlled trial aims to explore whether the use of specific devices-augmented reality (AR) glasses and noise-cancelling (ANC) headphones-can improve patient comfort and decrease physiological signs of stress during dental treatment. Participants in this study will undergo a standard dental procedure. In addition, they will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: a control group (no audiovisual intervention), a group using ANC headphones that play relaxing music during the procedure, or a group using AR glasses that display relaxing visual scenes along with the same music. Before the procedure, each participant will complete a psychological questionnaire (STAI) to assess their level of anxiety. During the procedure, physiological stress will be monitored using sensors that track parameters such as skin conductance (GSR) and heart rate. After the treatment, patients will be asked to rate their pain level and describe their experience with or without the audiovisual intervention. The goal is to better understand the effectiveness of non-pharmacological methods in reducing anxiety and stress in adult dental patients. Participation in the study is entirely voluntary and will not affect the quality or availability of dental care. Patients may withdraw at any time without consequences. The study also collects basic demographic information and patient feedback to evaluate potential factors that may influence anxiety levels. By testing new immersive tools such as AR glasses and ANC headphones in a real clinical setting, this research may contribute to improving patient well-being and enhancing the dental care experience.

Effects of Music on Procedural Pain in Distal Radius Fracture Reduction

This randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluates the effectiveness of music as a complementary intervention for pain control during non-surgical reduction of distal radius fractures in orthopedic patients. Distal radius fractures are among the most common traumatic injuries presenting to emergency departments and are frequently associated with intense procedural pain and significant physiological stress responses. Despite standard pharmacological analgesia, optimal pain management during fracture reduction remains a clinical challenge, and evidence regarding non-pharmacological adjuncts in the emergency orthopedic setting is still limited The study will enroll 192 adult patients admitted to the orthopedic emergency departments of AUSL Piacenza and AOU Parma with distal radius fractures requiring closed reduction. Participants will be randomly assigned (1:1:1) to one of three groups: a 20-minute session of patient-preferred music, a 20-minute session of standardized music selected by a music therapist, or standard care without music. Pain intensity will be assessed using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), while physiological stress will be evaluated through heart rate and blood pressure measurements, collected at baseline (T0) and 20 minutes later (T1), immediately after the reduction procedure The trial is designed as a prospective, randomized, controlled study with blinded data analysis, and all data will be collected and managed in compliance with current privacy and data protection regulations. By generating robust evidence on a low-cost, safe, and easily implementable intervention, the PolSound trial aims to improve procedural pain management and patient experience in emergency orthopedic care, potentially supporting the integration of music-based interventions into standard analgesic protocols.

SCIMITAR builds on our pilot study, the Feasibility and Acceptability of Music Imagery and Listening Interventions for Analgesia (FAMILIA), which demonstrated that telehealth delivery of music listening (ML) and music imagery (MI) interventions is feasible and acceptable to Veterans with chronic musculoskeletal pain. SCIMITAR leverages what we learned from FAMILIA into a fully powered trial, harnessing the benefits of sequential ML and MI into a stepped-care, music therapy intervention via telehealth for Veterans needing relief from pain.

Music Therapy During Hypothermia in the NICU

Background: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a neurological condition caused by poor oxygenation during the peripartum period. The main strategy to mitigate neurological damage is hypothermic therapy (HT), whose effectiveness-among other factors-depends on adequate pain management. Considering the prevalence of allodynia in this group of patients, routine nursing procedures can become sources of additional stress and pain. Music therapy is used in this population to promote self-regulation and relaxation, and may therefore help reduce pain levels after routine nursing procedures. Research question: What is the effect of an entrainment-based live music therapy intervention on pain levels in newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy undergoing hypothermic therapy after routine nursing procedures? Methodology: A randomized, crossover pilot and feasibility study. Participants will be 22 newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the University Hospital Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá. Participants will receive standard care plus a 15-minute live music therapy session after a routine nursing procedure, or standard care alone. The primary outcome is the Premature Infant Pain Profile-Revised (PIPP-R) scale, which will be assessed through video recordings. Secondary outcomes are vital signs, heart rate variability, and electroencephalography (EEG) recordings. Expected outcomes: Through this study, the aim is to improve the comfort and well-being of patients with HIE during TH. In addition, the safety and feasibility of music therapy in this population will be evaluated, seeking to contribute to current knowledge about the mechanisms of music therapy.

Effects of Music on Preoperative Anxiety in Patients With Femoral Fractures Undergoing Surgery

This randomized controlled trial (RCT) investigates the effectiveness of music therapy in reducing preoperative anxiety among elderly patients with femoral fractures. Preoperative anxiety is known to worsen physiological stability, increase pain perception, and negatively impact recovery, yet specific evidence on non-pharmacological interventions like music therapy in the orthogeriatric setting is lacking. The study will enroll 154 adult patients admitted to the Orthogeriatrics Unit for elective femoral fracture surgery. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either a 20-minute session of music therapy or standard care. Anxiety will be measured using the APAIS scale, and pain will be assessed with the NRS scale, both before and after the intervention. The trial is designed as a blinded, prospective RCT, with data collected and managed under current privacy regulations. By generating robust data on this low-cost, safe intervention, the study aims to improve preoperative management and patient outcomes in orthopedic surgical care.

Effect of Music Therapy on Postoperative Health Outcomes

Patients underwent surgical procedure experiences acute postoperative pain, but less than half report adequate postoperative pain relief. The poor management of pain after surgery is associated with inadequate sleep and poor mood. Music therapy is described as a non-pharmacological technique to accomplish individualized patient's goals for hospital treatment. Music has been used as a healing approach. In Saudi Arabia, there is a lack of evidence related to the effect of music therapy on pain and sleep among patients who underwent abdominal surgery. Studies are needed to address additional aspects of pain management and the promotion of sleep among Saudi adult postoperative people by using non-pharmacological modalities.

Music Therapy and Humanization in ED Healthcare Professionals

Background: Healthcare professionals in emergency departments frequently experience stressful situations that could jeopardize their mental health, sense of purpose, and ability to empathize with patients, families, and colleagues. Research question: What is the impact of a short music therapy program on the intra- and interpersonal factors of humanized care among emergency nursing staff at the University Hospital Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá (FSFB)? Methodology: This research is a mixed-methods pilot and feasibility study. For the quantitative component, we will apply the HUMAS (Healthcare Professional Humanization Scale) and ProQOL (Professional Quality of Life) measure at the start and at the end of the music therapy program. For the qualitative component, focus group interviews will be conducted and analyzed via thematic analysis. Discussion: This study seeks to support the nursing staff of the FSFB emergency department through an interactive, creative, and participatory music therapy self-care program focused on one of the most important pillars of the institution: the humanization of care.

The Effect of Music on Anxiety and Vasospasm in Patients Undergoing Transradial Angiography

Cardiovascular diseases are among the most significant health issues threatening human well-being, representing the leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide and in our country among non-communicable diseases. In Turkey, 33.4% of deaths are attributed to circulatory system diseases and ischemic heart diseases, with coronary artery disease (CAD) being the most common cause. The most frequently applied and accurate invasive diagnostic method for diagnosing CAD is coronary angiography. Coronary angiography, still regarded as the gold standard today, is a diagnostic procedure that visualizes the heart's blood vessels using contrast media. This procedure can be performed via the femoral, brachial, radial, or axillary arteries. In the past, coronary interventional procedures were commonly performed through the femoral artery. However, following the 2017 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines on ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) management, the radial artery has become the preferred route due to its lower risk of bleeding and shorter hospital stays. Coronary angiography is performed in a sterile environment while the patient is awake. Due to its invasive nature and the involvement of a vital organ, coronary angiography can evoke anxiety and fear of death in patients. Factors contributing to this include uncertainty about the procedure, unfamiliarity with the environment, communication with unknown personnel, exposure to medical terminology, and unusual sounds in the procedure room. The radial artery is more prone to vasospasm than other vessels used in coronary angiography, due to its smaller diameter and rich smooth muscle content. Local anesthesia is administered at the access site to reduce pain during radial artery interventions. Additionally, anticoagulant and vasodilatory drugs are used to prevent procedure-related vasospasms and thrombotic events. Despite these preventive measures, vasospasm is observed in 4-20% of patients undergoing transradial coronary angiography. Anxiety experienced by patients during the procedure can also contribute to vasospasm in the radial artery. Various invasive and non-invasive interventions, such as listening to music, acupressure, and massage, are frequently employed to reduce patient anxiety. Among these non-invasive methods, providing music during the procedure has gained prominence. Music helps divert patients' attention, enabling them to distance themselves from pain, fear, stress, and anxiety.

Music Effect on the Self-Injection, Testing Fear and Pain

Diabetes is a chronic and broad-spectrum metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia that occurs due to relative or absolute insulin deficiency or "insulin resistance" developed against insulin action in peripheral tissues, affecting many organs and causing multisystem involvement. Metabolic function continues to deteriorate after diagnosis, leading to worsening glycemic control and insulin therapy becoming necessary. However, patients may have difficulty adhering to insulin therapy. Fears about injections are common in both adults and children and, as research shows, are a major reason why people with diabetes avoid taking insulin. Addressing these fears is an important part of helping patients reduce their risk of diabetes-related complications. Helping patients manage their replacement pain may help reduce the effects of needle fear in the future. There are a number of strategies that can ease the pain.The use of music in pain management has advantages such as being reliable, cheap, and having no side effects, as well as reducing postoperative pain reports. Music distracts the individual from negative stimuli and allows them to focus on something they enjoy, thus reducing pain and anxiety. Music therapy has also been shown to have sedative-protective effects and reduce stress hormone levels. Listening to preferred music can distract and reduce the pain and negative emotions associated with an unpleasant experience.

Implementing Music Therapy for Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery Patients: A Quality Improvement Initiative

The purpose of this project is to introduce and implement music therapy as an evidence-based pain management protocol focused on reducing postoperative pain levels among Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) patients in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) of the project site. The clinical question guiding this initiative is: In adult patients undergoing a VATS procedure, does the implementation of music therapy lead to lower postoperative pain scores in the PACU compared to no intervention within an 8-week timeframe? The investigator will ask eligible patients their immediate pain scores upon arrival into the PACU and then start music of patient's choice via over-the-ear headphones. Pain scores will be rechecked 30 minutes after implementation of music therapy. The standard of care pain medications and/or usual care will not be withheld or altered after surgery in lieu of music therapy.

Physiological and Psychological Effects of Music Therapy in the Pregnant Woman and Fetus

To evaluate the effects of music therapy in the care of antepartum mothers admitted for long-term hospitalization due to the high-risk status of their pregnancy. The investigators speculate that mothers who receive music therapy will be more successful in forming positive coping habits, bonding with their infant, and increasing the length of incubation during their pregnancy. Furthermore, there is no research that correlates music therapy applied to stress reduction, increased coping, and increased caregiver-infant bonding prior to birth within one protocol. However, there is a significant amount of research supporting music therapy efficacy with neonatal intensive care unit infants and caregiver bonding post-partum as well as improved physiological signs of stress in infants in the post-partum period.

Efficacy of Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation Paired With Tailor-Made Notched Music Therapy Versus Tailor-made Notched Music Training for Chronic Subjective Tinnitus

This clinical study is a prospective, multicenter, randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical study. Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat sen University was the central unit, and Nanjing First Hospital, Sun Yat Sen people's Hospital, Guanfzhou Panyu central Hospital and Zhuhai integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine hospital were the cooperative units. In this study, 388 patients with chronic subjective tinnitus were recruited. In view of chronic subjective tinnitus, a common ear disease, the study gave the patients three months of treatment with transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation paired with tailor-made notched music therapy or tailor-made notched music training alone. By comparing the changes of subjective scale scores related to tinnitus before and after treatment in patients receiving two different therapies, such as THI, VAS, BAI, BDI, PSQI, to evaluate the efficacy of the two therapies, so as to judge whether transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation paired with tailor-made notched music therapy is better than tailor-made notched music training alone. In addition, the study will continue to follow up the patients after the treatment for one year to observe the difference in the long-term sustained efficacy of the two therapies. This clinical study will also evaluate the two therapies from the perspective of compliance and safety, and explore the factors that affect the efficacy of the two therapies.
