Prevention of Postpartum Smoking Relapse and Related Health Consequences by Breastfeeding Promotion

The objective of this randomized controlled trial is to examine the efficacy of a new intervention to prevent postpartum smoking relapse and related health consequences through breastfeeding promotion. After the pre-test, ex-smokers who are still abstinent from smoking will be randomized into either the breastfeeding intervention or the attention placebo control group. The outcomes are postpartum smoking relapse, breastfeeding practices, and maternal and child health.

Cigarette Filter Study

The overall purpose of this study is to determine the effects of using charcoal-filtered cigarettes on product perceptions, smoking behaviors, and biomarkers of exposure to tobacco-related toxicants. The main questions it aims to answer are: Do perceptions of cigarettes differ by their filter? Do people smoke charcoal-filtered cigarettes differently than cigarettes with conventional filters, and does this change their exposure to cigarette harms? Study participants will complete a 5-week laboratory-based, open-label, parallel-design randomized trial. After a baseline period of smoking their preferred brand, participants will smoke charcoal-filtered or non-charcoal-filtered cigarettes for 4 weeks while completing weekly sessions to assess primary outcomes. During weekly sessions, they will smoke two cigarettes in our laboratory, provide urine and carbon monoxide samples, and complete questionnaires.

Measuring Communal Coping in Dual-smoking Couples Making a Quit Attempt

Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, and quitting is especially difficult for couples who both smoke. When both partners smoke, they are less likely to quit successfully and more likely to relapse compared to people whose partner does not smoke. Research suggests that the way romantic partners interact and support each other during a quit attempt can make a real difference - but researchers do not yet know enough about what kinds of support actually help. This study examines a concept called "communal coping," which refers to when partners treat a shared health challenge - like quitting smoking - as something they are facing together as a team rather than as separate individuals. Researchers believe that couples who approach quitting this way may have better outcomes. To study this, researchers will ask both members of dual-smoking couples to complete brief daily surveys over two weeks while making a quit attempt. These surveys will track how partners support (or discourage) each other's quitting efforts on a day-to-day basis, along with cigarette use, cravings, and stress. This will help researchers understand which relationship patterns are most helpful for quitting, and identify specific targets for future couples-based smoking cessation programs.

Smoking Cessation With Wearables to Improve General, Oral Health and Quality of Life

Tobacco smoking remains one of the leading preventable causes of disease, disability, and premature death worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, tobacco use is responsible for more than eight million deaths each year globally, including deaths caused by direct smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke. Smoking is a major risk factor for a wide range of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, several types of cancer, and numerous oral health conditions. In addition to systemic effects, tobacco use is strongly associated with oral potentially malignant disorders and oral squamous cell carcinoma, representing a significant burden for public health systems. Despite the well-documented health risks, smoking cessation remains difficult for many individuals due to the addictive properties of nicotine and the complex behavioral and psychological components associated with tobacco dependence. Multimodal smoking cessation programs that combine behavioral counseling, psychological support, and continuous monitoring have been shown to increase the likelihood of successful cessation. However, access to these programs may be limited by logistical barriers, including geographic distance, time constraints, and limited availability of specialized services. In recent years, telemedicine and digital health technologies have emerged as promising tools to support healthcare delivery and improve access to treatment programs. Telemedicine platforms allow remote interaction between patients and healthcare professionals, facilitating communication, follow-up, and monitoring of patients over time. Additionally, wearable devices and remote monitoring systems enable the collection of physiological and behavioral data outside traditional clinical settings, providing clinicians with valuable information to support personalized interventions. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of a smoking cessation program delivered through a telerehabilitation model supported by an integrated telemedicine platform and wearable remote monitoring devices. The program is designed to support individuals who smoke tobacco products, including both combustible tobacco and alternative nicotine-containing products, by providing behavioral and psychological interventions combined with continuous remote monitoring. Participants enrolled in the study will be assigned to one of two groups. The intervention group will participate in a telerehabilitation program delivered through a dedicated telemedicine platform. This program will include structured behavioral and psychological treatment sessions aimed at supporting smoking cessation, along with remote monitoring through non-invasive wearable devices that allow healthcare professionals to track selected physiological parameters and patient engagement during the treatment process. The control group will receive the same multimodal behavioral and psychological treatment program but delivered through conventional rehabilitation methods without the use of telemedicine technologies or wearable monitoring devices. By comparing these two approaches, the study aims to explore whether the integration of telemedicine and wearable technologies into smoking cessation programs may improve patient engagement, facilitate monitoring, and potentially enhance the effectiveness of behavioral interventions aimed at reducing tobacco use. The findings of this study may contribute to the development of innovative digital health strategies for smoking cessation and provide evidence to support the integration of telemedicine into addiction treatment and preventive healthcare programs.

Acute Ocular Effects of Cigarette Smoking

This prospective study aims to evaluate the short-term effects of smoking on corneal tomographic and biometric measurements in healthy adults. After baseline examinations and measurements are taken in both smoking and non-smoking participants, the same measurements will be repeated after 10 minutes of external exposure, and within-group and between-group changes will be compared. The aim of the study is to determine whether acute smoking exposure leads to measurable immediate changes in corneal tomographic and biometric parameters.

Effect of Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy on Salivary Biomarkers in Smokers and Non-Smokers With Periodontitis

This study evaluates the effect of non-surgical periodontal therapy on salivary biomarkers (Dkk-1, Sclerostin, and PLAP-1) and clinical periodontal parameters in patients with periodontitis. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that destroys tooth-supporting tissues. Smoking is a significant risk factor that worsens periodontal destruction and reduces the effectiveness of standard therapies. * The trial is a non-randomized comparative clinical study. * It includes 44 adult patients diagnosed with Stage II and III periodontitis. * The participants are divided into two equal groups: 22 current smokers and 22 non-smokers. * Participants will undergo a baseline examination, followed by standardized non-surgical periodontal therapy consisting of scaling and root planing. * A follow-up visit will be conducted six weeks post-therapy to repeat clinical measurements and saliva collection. * The primary objective is to evaluate changes in salivary biomarker levels and clinical parameters (Plaque Index, Gingival Index, bleeding on probing, Probing Pocket Depth, Clinical Attachment Level) after treatment.

Effectiveness of Brief Smoking Cessation Counselling in Pre-Anaesthesia Assessment Clinic

The goal of this clinical trial is to evaluate whether a brief, nurse-delivered smoking cessation intervention can increase pre-operative smoking abstinence and improve perioperative outcomes among adult elective surgical patients who are current smokers. The main questions it aims to answer are: Does a perioperative nurse-delivered AWARD brief counselling intervention with active referral and a tailored perioperative smoking cessation booklet increase the 7-day point prevalence abstinence rate on the day of surgery, biochemically validated by exhaled carbon monoxide and salivary cotinine? Is this intervention feasible and acceptable in the pre-anaesthetic assessment clinic in terms of recruitment, retention, intervention fidelity, and patient compliance? Researchers will compare patients receiving the nurse-led AWARD brief counselling plus active referral and tailored perioperative booklet to patients receiving usual pre-anaesthetic care without structured smoking cessation counselling, to see if the intervention leads to higher pre-operative abstinence and signals of reduced post-operative complications. Participants will: Attend the pre-anaesthetic assessment clinic where eligibility and baseline data (e.g., smoking behavior, readiness to quit, sociodemographic information) are collected and exhaled carbon monoxide is measured. Be randomly assigned to either receive brief AWARD-model counselling with active referral and a tailored perioperative smoking cessation booklet from a trained perioperative nurse, or to continue with usual pre-anaesthetic care. Have their smoking status reassessed on the day of surgery (including repeat CO and salivary cotinine testing) and at 1-month follow-up, along with collection of post-operative complication data and patient satisfaction with the smoking cessation support.
