Stem Cell Applications in Biliary Atresia Patients

Recently, mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transplantation has emerged as a promising treatment for liver cirrhosis in adults. Additionally, bone marrow-derived stem cell transplantation has shown success in treating children with biliary atresia (BA). This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of Umbilical Cord-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell (UC-MSC) therapy in BA through a multicentric randomized controlled trial.

Caudal Anesthesia Versus Local Anesthesia in Hypospadias

Hypospadias is among the most common congenital genital malformations in boys and is typically treated through surgical intervention. During pediatric urological surgery, caudal anesthesia, also known as a caudal block, is frequently employed as a regional anesthetic technique. It has proven to be a safe and effective anesthetic approach in children, with a low rate of anesthesia-related complications. However, despite the low incidence of complications directly associated with the caudal block, there is limited and inconclusive evidence regarding its impact on surgical complications. Therefore, this randomized controlled superiority trial aims to evaluate whether the use of caudal anesthesia, compared to the dorsal penile block, is associated with an increased incidence of urethrocutaneous fistulas and glans dehiscence following hypospadias repair.

The Efficacy of Combining Platelet-rich Plasma With Crystallized Phenol in Pilonidal Sinus Disease

The use of local liquid phenol for pilonidal sinus disease was first introduced by Maurica and Greenwood in 1964. Phenol, also known as carbolic acid, has been proven to be an effective sclerosing agent for treating pilonidal sinus diseas. Its antiseptic and anesthetic qualities make it suitable for application in awake patients under local anesthesia. The treatment of pilonidal sinus diseas in children with crystallized phenol was first published by Ateş et al in 2018. However, the treatment involving only crystallized phenol can require numerous sessions, potentially extending the duration of the treatment. IIn this study, the investigators, investigated whether the application of platelet-rich plasma following crystallized phenol treatment could accelerate the healing process and reach better outcomes. This study evaluates the efficacy of PRP as a treatment modality for pilonidal sinus disease in pediatric patients.

Transumbilical Laparoscopic Appendectomy

Transumbilical laparoscopic appendectomy (TULA) is increasingly favored in the treatment of appendicitis within the realm of minimally invasive surgical approaches. This procedure offers advantages such as superior cosmetic outcomes and reduced postoperative pain. However, like all surgical interventions, it carries the inherent risk of surgical site infections (SSI), which pose significant challenges to patient health and healthcare systems by escalating treatment costs, prolonging recovery, and increasing morbidity rates. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of the "glove finger method" in mitigating SSI risk in TULA. The rationale for this study is predicated on the hypothesis that the glove finger method could serve as a simple and cost-effective measure offering potential protection against SSIs. When compared to traditional methods, this technique may not only reduce surgical duration but also diminish the risk of SSIs, thereby potentially decreasing hospital stay durations. Furthermore, enhancing the understanding of factors contributing to the development of SSIs and developing effective strategies for their prevention can elevate patient care quality and alleviate the burden on healthcare systems.
