CONSCIOUS: A Pilot Trial of a Media Orientation Intervention to Encourage Men's Help Seeking for Mental Health Difficulties

Mental health difficulties among males are an issue of public health concern. Men are also at higher risk of suicidal ideation and self-harm and are poor at help-seeking due to factors including stigma, cultural norms and gendered expectations of masculinity. Yet, in Nigeria, a significant gap remains in media orientation intervention to create awareness on symptoms of mental health difficulties and support channels to encourage help-seeking. In essence, the current study aims to test the feasibility and acceptability of a novel intervention titled, psyChosOcial media awareNesS for SuiCIde symptoms, including other mental health PrOblems and help seeking mediUmS (CONSCIOUS) for addressing awareness of mental health difficulties in comparison to the waitlist control group for the purposes of improving men's help seeking, social support and reducing anxiety in Nigeria.

Media Orientation to Improve Childhood Vaccine Uptake and Address Parent and Caregivers Vaccine-related Anxiety: A Pilot Study

Vaccine hesitancy-defined as delayed acceptance or refusal of vaccines despite availability-remains a significant barrier to childhood immunisation uptake in Nigeria, a country with high zero-dose unvaccinated children. Several factors limit vaccine uptake, including poor awareness, misinformation, fear, anxiety and a perceived sense of conspiracy. Yet, a gap exists to address this urgent problem. The proposed study seeks to pilot the feasibility and acceptability of a novel co-produced media campaign intervention called ASSURed awareness campaign to encourage childhood vaccine uptakE (ASSURE) with parent-caregivers who are not or partially up to date with their child's vaccination. The ASSURE intervention is designed to encourage vaccine uptake and access, reduce vaccine hesitancy whilst addressing vaccine-related anxiety. The ASSURE intervention is low-intensity, lasting approximately 3-5-minute designed to raise awareness of the need for vaccination uptake and its implications for children, including their development and well-being whist addressing vaccine related anxiety and fears. The proposed study is also to pilot and test the instrument to determine effectiveness and cost effectiveness including the mechanism on why the intervention might potentially work.

Transparent Communication to Improve Mental Wellbeing and Attitude Towards Reintegration

Reintegrating those once affiliated with proscribed terrorist groups constitutes significant global challenges due to public stigma, poor awareness of reintegration programmes and resentment towards incentives provided to rehabilitated former members of such groups. Of central concern is the anxiety, trauma and depression suffered alongside distrust for reintegration programmes, including the genuine repentance of former members of the proscribed group. The implication is its risk in exacerbating reoffending. Yet, a gap exists to address this urgent problem. The proposed study seeks to test and pilot the feasibility and acceptability of a novel intervention called Prosociality, Empathy and Awareness Communication to aid rEintegration (PEACE) in improving mental well-being and public attitude towards reintegration. The intervention is a low-intensity intervention lasting approximately 3-5 minutes design to create awareness on the rationale behind reintegration programme, reduce anxiety, depression and foster positive attitude towards reintegration.

FAmily Oriented Mindfulness Informed Legal Education (FAMiLE) Programme for Parent or Carers Affected by Incarceration and Improving Parenting in Nigeria

Incarceration is a prevalent problem globally and in Nigeria. Its effect significantly impacts left behind parent or primary care givers and also the wellbeing of the families and children. Limited access to support has posed a constraint in effectively addressing the issues suffered by affected families in Nigeria. In addition, having a family member incarcerated could affect parenting due to factors such as anxiety, trauma, depression, poor social support, awareness of legal channels for complaint and harsh parenting to children. The implication is that it could not only have a negative impact on the affected victim but also on their parenting styles or caring responsibilities, which could be detrimental to children\'s development and wellbeing and resort to criminal behaviours. In essence this study seeks to examine the feasibility and acceptability of a brief FAmily oriented Mindfulness informed Legal Education (FAMiLE) intervention in comparison to the waitlist control group (who will be administered the intervention at a later date) in improving parenting, legal awareness, social cohesion, wellbeing and reducing trauma and anxiety as a result of the effect of having a family member incarcerated.

Problem Management Plus Mindfulness-informed Legal Education for Addressing Gender-based Violence and Improving Parenting

Gender-based violence and, more specifically, domestic violence is a prevalent problem globally and in Nigeria. Its effect significantly impacts women and also the wellbeing of their families. Limited access to support has posed a constraint in effectively addressing the issues suffered by affected victims in Nigeria. In addition, gender-based violence could affect parenting due to factors such as anxiety, trauma, depression, poor social support, limited awareness of legal channels for complaint and harsh parenting to children. The implication is that it could not only have a negative impact on the affected victim but also on their parenting styles or caring responsibilities, which could be detrimental to the child development, wellbeing and the potential subsequent resort to criminal behaviours. In essence, the current study aims to test the feasibility and acceptability of a novel cross disciplinary intervention titled, Problem Management plus Mindfulness-informed Legal Education (PM+MiLE) for addressing gender-based violence and improving parenting in Nigeria in comparison to the waitlist control group for the purposes of improving social cohesion, legal awareness, wellbeing and reducing depression, including trauma and anxiety as a result of experiencing gender-based violence, in Nigeria.

Postoperative Dietary Intake of Hip Fracture Patients

The goal of this observational study is to observe the postoperative dietary intake in older adult hip fracture patients from their day of surgery (day zero) until day three inclusive. The aims of this study are: Primary aim: To observe if the postoperative dietary energy intake (kJ/kcal) of older adult hip fracture patients meets Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) needs. Secondary aims: To explore if there is a correlation between postoperative dietary intake and length of hospital stay. To explore the relationship between comorbidity (where reported) and postoperative dietary intake, according to dietary intake. To explore (if) in the development of postoperative complications (infection, pressure ulcer and VTE), there is a correlation with postoperative dietary intake.

Art as Healing: A Community-informed Art-based Programme (CiAbP) for Reintegrating Ex-offenders Into Society in Nigeria

The goal of this pilot experimental study is to test a community-informed art-based programme in improving community members trauma from crime and to aid the reintegration of ex-offenders into society. The main question it aims to answer are: • What is the feasibility in terms of recruitment, retention, adherence to the intervention and communities/victims' satisfaction with CiAbP to promote healing and improve the successful reintegration of ex-offenders into society? Participants will be randomly allocated into two groups. The first group, the intervention group, will receive the Community-informed Art-based programme (CiAbP). The second group will receive government intervention involving media messages from the National Orientation Agency devoid of CiAbP. The CiAbP. sessions will cover relevant aspects of art, such as photo story, story telling, poetry, and drawing in tackling trauma and negative attitudes towards ex-offenders reintegration. Researchers will compare CiAbP group with the media orientation group to see if there are differences between a change in attitude towards ex-offenders' reintegration at base line, end of intervention and three months follow up.
