The Role of Carbohydrate Blends and Electrolytes on Physical and Mental Performance During Cycling in the Heat

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a milk permeate-based sports drink on hydration, carbohydrate oxidation, exercise performance, vigilance, and reaction time in the heat. We anticipate that the milk permeate, with 44 g per liter and high sodium and potassium, will lead to better hydration, energy delivery, and physical and cognitive performance.

Hydration & Female Life Stages

Female life stages including premenopausal, perimenopausal, postmenopausal, are characterized by changing concentrations and patterns of hormones. The premenopause stage represents the reproductive years with normal menstrual cycles lasting between 21-35 days. The perimenopause stage is the beginning of the menopause transition and can last up to 10 years. During this transition, menstrual cycles become longer and irregular in length (7 days or longer). After 12 consecutive months with no period, the transition is complete into the postmenopause stage. Hormones that change across the lifespan are known to influence systems that regulate thirst, fluid balance, and sodium balance. Yet, fluid balance across life stages remains poorly understood, with no direct comparisons across all three life stages. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of female life stage on rehydration with water and electrolyte solution after overnight fast and fluid restriction

Effectiveness and Safety of a Hydrating Gel Containing Polyvinyl Pyrrolidine, Algin and Hyaluronic Acid Applied After and Without Fractional CO₂ Laser Therapy

The purpose of this interventional study is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of a hydrating gel containing aqua, carrageenan, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, algin, gellan gum, and hyaluronic acid. The study will assess the gel's ability to support optimal skin recovery following fractional CO₂ laser therapy and its effectiveness and safety as a daily adjunctive skincare treatment. Outcomes related to skin hydration, skin barrier function, tolerability, and adverse events will be evaluated throughout the study period. Female participants aged 18 to 60 years who provide informed consent will be enrolled in this study. Participants will undergo a 2-week priming period with topical tretinoin prior to fractional CO₂ laser treatment. Clinical evaluations will be performed at baseline, immediately after the laser procedure, and on Days 3, 7, and 14 post-treatment. Assessments conducted by a board-certified dermatologist will include dermoscopy, TEWAmeter assessment, erythema assessment, and evaluation of pain and discomfort using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS).

Effects of Creatine and Heat Exposure on Exercise Performance and Body Water Distribution

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn whether creatine supplementation changes how the body adapts to repeated exercise in the heat in healthy recreationally active adults and varsity athletes. The study will also examine whether creatine affects fluid balance, blood volume changes and exercise performance. The main questions it aims to answer are: Does creatine supplementation increase plasma volume and total body water during repeated heat exposure more than placebo? Does creatine supplementation improve exercise performance after heat acclimation more than placebo? Does creatine supplementation influence cardiovascular responses to heat stress? Researchers will compare a creatine supplementation group to a placebo group to determine whether creatine changes the magnitude of heat acclimation adaptations. Participants will: Complete baseline measurements of body composition, hydration, blood markers, and exercise performance. Consume either creatine monohydrate or a placebo supplement daily Complete repeated supervised exercise sessions in a controlled heated environment Undergo repeated assessments of body water, temperature, heart rate, and exercise performance throughout the study

Beverage Hydration Index of Different Solutions

In this study, the impact of two electrolyte hydration stick products (Hydramin containing an electrolyte/amino acid formulation and an identical electrolyte product with the amino-acids replaced with carbohydrate, dextrose) dissolved in 1 liter of water will be assessed and compared to a control (1 liter Smart Water). It is hypothesized that the addition of amino acids and glycine should improve the Beverage Hydration Index above water alone and perform comparably to the carbohydrate rich solution. This study will focus on general population (not athletes) and follow very similar approaches used in previous studies within the Center for Nutraceutical and Dietary Supplements Research, with the addition of blood glucose testing and body water measurements. Hydration will be assessed via fluid balance (the difference between the amount of water consumed and passed as urine) and calculations of beverage hydration index (the relative amount of urine passed after consumption of a drink compared to water)as well as time in positive fluid balance, and specific gravity, and sodium and potassium in urine. Blood glucose before and following consumption using finger pricks and a glucometer will also be assessed.

Potassium, Hydration, Cardiovascular, and Kidney Study (PHACKs)

Compared with White Adults, Non-Hispanic Black Adults are at an elevated risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) and end stage chronic-kidney disease (CKD), two of the leading causes of death in the United States. Inadequate hydration status is associated with risk factors for both CVD and CKD. Prior data show that Black individuals are less likely to be adequately hydrated when compared with their White counterparts. Further, socioeconomic factors have been shown to influence hydration practices. Inadequate hydration influences certain hormones that regulate blood volume and impact blood pressure, but increasing potassium intake may provide some positive effects on normalizing these hormones and blood pressure. Black adults, in particular, are more likely to consume less potassium, have inadequate hydration, and tend to have higher blood pressure. As such, there is a critical need for effective strategies to address racial disparities in hydration and resultant health consequences; as well as establish the role of socioeconomic factors contributing to hydration. Therefore, the investigators are seeking to test the investigators' central hypothesis that water with a potassium supplement will improve hydration and cardiovascular health in young White adults (n = 20, 10 females, 10 males), and to a greater extent in young Black Adults (n = 20, 10 females, 10 males. The investigators will assess measures of blood pressure, arterial stiffness, and biomarkers in the urine and blood samples prior to and following a 14-day hydration intervention of 1) bottled water and 2) bottled water with potassium supplementation (2000mg potassium/day).
